How to decrease overwhelm during a crisis, like Covid-19, and gain a better understanding of self5/3/2020 After the government closed all non-essential services, told us to stay inside, wash our hands and only go outside when totally necessary, it felt as if my whole world flipped upside down. These unprecedented times have caused a huge disruption in my normal life and routine, and these last few weeks have been a total adjustment period for me.
After a month and a half of adapting to new realities and lifestyle changes, my new norm is having work meetings and coaching sessions via Zoom from my home office, homeschooling my six-year old daughter while also trying to still be the “fun mom” and find creative ways to stay connected with friends and family as we patiently wait for this crisis to be over. In the midst of managing a situation like the social isolation and social distancing protocols, feelings of uncertainty can cause distress and periods of overwhelm. These feelings are totally natural when facing threats that are beyond our control. However, as I took time to reflect over these past few weeks, I discovered three things that are really working for me and my clients to help us decrease overwhelm, stay focused and remain positive and productive. First, is the importance of time management. This new way of life and change in routine has been very overwhelming to many and has caused people to become fearful, stressed, anxious, and utterly confused over what the future holds. However, if you find comfort in having a schedule/routine it can be extremely relieving to get that back. By taking the time to set an intention for your day, the day before, and create a schedule for the day/week ahead, you are more likely to get back in routine and feel more comfortable in your current situation. Second, is the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. As we continue to grapple with the repercussions and effects of the Coronavirus and social isolation practices, try to focus on the things you do have control over rather than the things you don’t. This can be transferred over into your mindset and the way you are thinking about your current situation. Reminding yourself that you will get through this challenge, focusing on what you have to be grateful for and just knowing with confidence that this too shall pass will help alleviate a lot of overwhelm and anxiety. Lastly, follow through! Get that workout in, go for that morning run, clean out your closet and commit to yourself, because when you do that it will make a HUGE difference. What’s stopping you? Now more than ever is the best time to work on yourself, and by following through on the commitments you make to yourself you will feel more empowered to do more. There is also an opportunity for you to complete some of those tasks around your home or in your business that you haven’t had the opportunity to do get to. Moreover, it appears that the daily lifestyle changes, total loss of control, and fear of the unknown has resulted in a consistent feeling of uneasiness and worry that lingers in all of our minds. In times of high stress and anxiety, such as this one, it is crucial to remember the importance of taking care of ourselves. By focusing on the things we do have control over, like creating a schedule, keeping a positive mindset, and focusing on following through on those little projects or goals we set out to accomplish months ago, we are able to regain a sense of normalcy, even during the most challenging of times. Though times are hard for everyone right now, remind yourself out loud with positive affirmations that you will get through this challenge, and, not only will you get through it, but you will come through it with a feeling of gratitude, strength and a better understanding of yourself. One thing I know for sure, is in every challenge there is an opportunity for growth you just have to find it. With great confidence in you, Natasha aka NBR :)
